It emerged from a two-decade civil war between the mainly Muslim north and the Animist and Christian south, only to see fighting break out in the western region of Darfur in early 2003. The north-south civil war is said to have cost the lives of 1.5 million people. In Darfur, the UN says more than two million people have fled their homes and more than 200,000 have been killed.Southern rebels said they were battling oppression and marginalisation. After two years of bargaining, they signed a comprehensive peace deal with the government to end the civil war in January 2005.
 Oil production and revenues are rising. Decades of fighting have left Sudan's infrastructure in tatters. With the return of millions of displaced southerners, there is a pressing need for reconstruction.  The economic dividends of peace could be great. Sudan has large areas of cultivatable land, as well as gold and cotton. Its oil reserves are ripe for further exploitation.

   Sudan  has adopted Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 and is  member state of UN human rights since  12-11-1956  .Since, all people in Sudan are entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. These adopted human rights by Sudan include that Slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms;  none shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; that none shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile; Everyone in Sudan has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit. Further :-
The Republic of the Sudan is a member of International organization founded as the Organization of African Unity to promote cooperation among the independent nations of Africa. It has ratified many UN Human Rights Conventions and thus has made binding international commitments to adhere to the standards laid down in these universal human rights documents. In as far as the Sudan has ratified the Optional Protocols for these Conventions, the inhabitants of the Sudan and their representatives are able to invoke their human rights through these bodies. All inhabitants of the Sudan may turn to the UN Human Rights Committee for violations of specific human rights. Since the Sudan is an African Union Member, its citizens and NGOs may file complaints to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. They may also file complaints according to the European Union guidelines (on Human Rights Defenders, Death Penalty and Torture) to Embassies of European Union Member States and the Delegations of the European Commission. In cases of human rights violations by multinational enterprises, they may also invoke the National Contact Point in an OECD member state. The Sudan has as yet not joined the International Criminal Court.
